What is Self-Reg®?
Shanker Self-Reg® is a process, grounded in neuroscience, for developing growth-promoting modes of self-regulation and dealing with stress.
This 4 part class is designed to help parents learn to read, reframe, and respond to their child's behavior, strong emotions, and dysregulation, while developing the skills and strategies to support their child's overall well-being. While this class is ideal for parents of children under 8 years old, the tools that you will learn can be applied to any one with a nervous system.
The ultimate, long-term Self-Reg® goal is to help children acquire the necessary understanding of when and how to manage their own energy and tension, so they can adapt to the various stresses of life. But Self-Reg® is also personal. If we are going to support our children’s self-regulation we first have to understand our own stress and know how to manage our own energy and tension.
What's Included In Self-Reg® for Parents...
Week 1
The Science of Co-Regulation
This class uses the science of neuro-biology as a framework for better understanding the stress within our family dynamics and manage overwhelm. It focuses on practical tools that demystify the "WTF!?!" moments of parenting, including:
- How to distinguish between misbehavior and stress-behavior
- How the triune brain and nervous system processes stress
- How and when to co-regulate with your child to get back on track
You’ll finish this class with a deeper understanding of how your nervous system interacts with those around you and how to implement co-regulation techniques in your day-to-day life.
Week 2
Recognizing Stressors
This course dives into stressors, and how excess stress affects our nervous systems and those that we love. In this lesson, you’ll learn:
- The 5 domains of stress
- Hidden stressors and sensory needs
- Stress cycles and the multiplying effect of stressors
You’ll finish this course with a deep understanding of stress behavior and the needs behind your child's outbursts and your own. This powerful reframe will help you understand your own stressors, reducing frustration and parenting guilt, leaving you more resourced to co-regulate with your child.
Week 3
Reducing Stressors, Increasing Calm
Self-regulation is a process unique to each individual and situation. In this lesson, you’ll learn:
- The difference between up-regulating and down-regulating.
- How to reduce the unique stress load of your child
- The best strategies for supporting individual nervous systems
You’ll finish this lesson understanding how to increase your child's sense of safety and calm within their environments and relationships. And you'll be more empowered to advocate for your own needs as well.
Week 4
Restoration and Building Resilience
Reducing stress is not enough if we don't know what it's like to experience restoration, calm and joy. In this course, you’ll learn:
- How to identify what is restorative to your family members.
- How to replace stress cycles with regulation cycles
- How to foster your child's growth mentality and resilience
You’ll finish this course with your personal roadmap to co-regulation, stress reduction and restoration within your family.

I'm Betsy Lamberson
I am a single mother to an incredible young son and deeply passionate about supporting parents and caregivers on their journey of conscious parenting. There is a paradox of modern parenting, where so much of the focus is on the child, and the fact that a child's well-being is inextricably linked to their caregiver's is pretty ignored. I want to change that.
I am a certified facilitator of Shanker Self-Reg®, which was developed by one of the world’s leading authorities on the science of self-regulation, Dr. Stuart Shanker. Self-Reg® takes some of the most complex science of neuro-biology and polyvagal theory and breaks it down into five fundamental steps that can be executed in real life to help manage the energy and tension of not only our children, but also ourselves.
